CONSIDER THE = SIGN AS A BALANCE BEAM THAT IS PERFECTLY BALANCED. THEREFORE WHATEVER YOU DO TO ONE SIDE YOU MUST DO THE SAME TO THE OTHER SIDE(ADD, SUBTRACT, MULTIPLY, DIVIDE, SQUARE ROOT, SQUARE ETC.).
-K=5 NOW MULTIPLY BOTH SIDES BY -1
(-1)(-K)=(-1)5
K=-5
PROOF
-(-5)=5
5=5
