Question 684828: Can someone help me solve the following equation. I've tried it three different ways and still keep getting it wrong.
Write an equation of the line containing the given point and parallel to the given line. (8,-3); 3x + 2y = 7
-2y=-3x+7
y= 3/2x - 7/2
y-(-3)= 3/2 (x-8)
y+3=3/2x - 24/2
y=3/2x - 24/2 - 3
y=3/2x - 21/2
I don't know where I went wrong. Please assist. Thank you
Answer by ReadingBoosters(3246) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Start with 3x + 2y = 7
solve for y, subtract 3x from both sides
2y = -3x + 7
y =
...
slope is
Parallel lines have the same slope.
...
Using slope and the point,
y - -3 = (x-8)
y + 3 =
y +3 =
y =
...
...
First error was in solving for y, when you subtract the 3x the 2y remains positive.
Second error was in subtracting fractions
if you were on the right track,
