-2 is not a variable
Do you mean f(x)=3x+2 ?

You are mixing apples and oranges.
This is what your problem should say:
f(x) = 3x + 2
---
Find f(-2)
-------
Ans: f(-2) = 3(-2)+2 = -6+2 = -4
