Question 67507: Hi, I need help with the following equations: Thanks in advance!
1. 36 - 9y = 3y
2. -21 + 4p = 10

Equations are easy once you realize how they work. Imagine an equation as a seesaw. If you have two people of the same weight on both sides, then both sides will stay at the same level. If one person is added to one side and not the other, then that side will be heavier and ultimately fall to the ground. It's the same idea with an equation! What you do to one side, you must do to the other side to keep the equation in "balance". For instance, on #1 above you can add 30000000 to one side as long as you add 30000000 to other side. This is key to solving any equation.
1. 36 - 9y = 3y
First, let's add 9y to BOTH sides (remember: what you do to one side you must do to the other)
(36-9y) + 9y = 3y + 9y
36-9y+9y = 12y
36=12y (now divide both sides by 12)
= y
3 = y. Always check you answer! Plug 3 into the original equation
36 - 9(3) = 3(3)
36 - 27 = 9
9 = 9. So, y = 3.
AS for the second, we have
-21 + 4p = 10. (First, let's add 21 to both sides)
(-21 + 4p) + 21 = 10 + 21
-21 + 4p + 21 = 10 + 21
4p = 31 (now, divde both sides by 4)
p =
so p = or 7
Let's check
-21 + 4* = 10
-21 + 31 = 10
10 = 10. So, p =
Hope this helps you!! If you have any more problems or questions in general, just ask. I'll be happy to help you!
