1 a + 6 b = 1 .............1

1 a + 2 b = -3 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by 1
Multiply (2) by -3
1 a 6 b = 1
-3 a -6 b = 9
Add the two equations
-2 a = 10
/ -2
a = -5
plug value of x in (1)
1 a + 6 b = 1
-5 + 6 b = 1
6 b = 1 + 5
6 b = 6
b = 1
a=-5,b=1

elimination method
a+6b=1
a+2b=-3

a + 6b = 1 ------ eq (i)
a + 2b = - 3 ---- eq (ii)
4b = 4 ------ Subtracting eq (ii) from eq (i)

b = , or

a + 6(1) = 1 ------ Substituting 1 for b in eq (i)

a = 1 - 6, or
