By the Remainder Theorem we know that f(a) = the remainder of . And we can use synthetic division to divide:
16 |    1   -17    17    -17    17
====         16   -16     16   -16
       ===========================
        1    -1     1    -1      1

The number in the lower right corner is the remainder. So is 1 at x = 16. This may not be very simple but it is probably easier than raising 16 to all those different powers.
