Question 616792: Two times a number equals 8.
How do you write this problem?
What is the answer

You must give the unknown number a letter that represents it so let us call the number 'a'
therefore:
2 times 'a' = 8
this should be written as so:
2a = 8
then you want to find a so in this case you can divide the 2a by 2 to get a, but when you do so all numbers on both sides have to be divided by 2 to keep the equation balanced:

which then gives:
a = 4
so the unknown number is 4.
