Question 606396: Please help me solve this equation: y-4y+3=-30
I think it would be like y-4y wold be 4y then 4y+3 would be 7y?

Answer by Earlsdon(6294)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Solve for y:
Perform the indicated subtraction on the left side.
Now Subtract 3 from both sides.
Finally, divide both sides by -3.

Note! You cannot add 4y+3 to get 7y, why not? because the two terms are not alike. It's sorta like trying to add $4 + 3 pesos! I can't be done!
