Hello Lyn,

8x - 5 + 9x = 17x - 5

We need to prove that left hand side is equal to right hand side.

This can be written by adding the like terms.

First grouping them and then adding, we get:

8x + 9x - 5

Adding the like terms, we get:

17x - 5

Hence, the required answer.
