When fractions are involved you must always put the parenthesis at the right place. Your problem can be interpreted in two ways
Multiply the equation by 6 to eliminate the denominator
30+a = 24

a=-30+24
a= -6
Multiply by 6
5+a= 24
-5
a= 24-5
a= 19
