Jasper collects nickels,dimes, and quarters in a jar. There are twice as many nickels as there are quarters. If there is $15.30 in dimes and $74.80 in all, how many quarters are there?
This is what I tried: 2x for nickels and x for quarters = 2x + x + $15.30 = $74.80

Your equation is a good start, but it fails to include the dollar values for a nickel and a quarter.
The value of x quarters is 0.25*x
The value of 2x nickels is 0.05*2*x
The value of the dimes is $15.30.
If we add all that up, the total dollar amount is $74.80.
So your equation would be:
0.25x + 0.05*(2x) + 15.30 = 74.80.
