But i do not understand how to get rid of the negative variable and the worksheet says the answer is 6 but i dont know how to get a positive 6 when i ended up with a negative 6.

If you have
-r = -6
multiply both sides by -1 to get
r = 6
which is your answer. Alternatively, you can divide both sides by -1 to get the same answer.
