If you add 4 of something to 1 of the same something, you get 5 of the something. No different here -- the 'something' here is b. So, b+4b is 5b, so we have 5b=-90. Divide both sides by 5 to get b=-18.

b+4b=-90 Simplify both sides of the equal sign as much as you can.
(1+4)b=-90 Combine like terms.
5b=-90
5b/5=-90/5 To get the b isolated divide both sides by it's coefficient, 5.
b=-18
:
Check by substituting b=-18 into the original equation and simplifying to see if both sides equal when b=-18.
(-18)+4(-18)=-90
-18-72=-90
-90=-90 It checks out, we're right!!!
Happy Calculating!!!
