The only thing wrong is that you that the answer is 3. Somewhere back in the first or second grade you should have become pretty certain that 5 minus 2 is 3. Where did that youthful confidence go?

It could be 3. It depends on the question.
If the question is, "what is y?", then the answer is 3.

If the question is, "what is the speed of light?", then it's not 3.
