Question 552661: Homework worksheet (for my 4th grader - but not from the classroom textbook) directions read to "Write each expression as an open sentence."
but then the expressions to be rewritten all look like they are already open sentences to me?
ie. 7+x=21
50-y=35
s x 12 =84
It's been awhile, but I think the directions are wrong?
Thanks for any guidance.

An open sentence can be be true or false. Math expressions, including equations, that include variables are, by definition, open sentences.

Whoever wrote that worksheet may have something else in mind, such as rewriting the equations in words, that are still math open sentences. For example "seven more than some number is twenty one."

Your understanding of open sentences is correct. Ask the person (teacher?) who assigned the work sheet.
