: the spedometer in a car is only correct when the car has new tires. Explain, using appropiate math, what happens as the tire wears down. It may be helpful to get some information on tire tickness of the tread and find out how speed is measured in a car. For example, a 75R14 tire has a diameter of 14 inches. From this you could figure out how far a car travels in one revolution of the wheel, What happens when the tire is worn down, say 1 inch? Illustrate your explanations with diagrams, grapsh and formulas.
It may be helpful to know that 1 mile equals 5280 feet.

Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A CIRCLE WITH A DIAMETER OF 14 INCHES HAS A CIRCUMFERANCE OF 2*PI*R OR
2*3.14*7=43.98 INCHES THEREFORE IT TAKES 5280*12/43.98=63,360/43.98=1440.6548 REVOLUTIONS TO COVER 1 MILE.
ASSUMING THE CIRCUMFERANCE IS WOEN DOWN 1 INCH THEN WE HAVE 43.98-1=42.98 INCH CIRCUMFERANCE THUS 63,360/42.98=1474.174 REVOLTIONS TO COVER 1 MILE.
THUS THE LOSS OF 1 INCH REQUIRES THE WHEEL TO MAKE AN ADDITIONAL 1474.174-1440.5448=33.6292 REVOLUTIONS TO COVER 1 MILE.
