Question 535794: I have an exam in just a little more than an hour. I am going over my review for the exam and there are 2 problems that I have the answers for, because they have given us that but I need to know how to go about solving the probelems. Anyone's help is greatly appreciated!!!
_x+4_ = _x+10___
x-3 x+2
Not sure if this makes any sense... I am not sure how to type this up.. It is fractions. x+4 is over x-3 and then it is = in the middle with x+10 above x+2.
The other one that I am struggling with is this
__5__ + _3__ = 1
3x x
This is the same it is a fraction but instead of it being a fraction at the end it is an equals sign with a 1. Thanks so much!

=
Cross multiply
(x+4)(x+2) = (x-3)(x+10)
FOIL
x^2 + 2x + 4x + 8 = x^2 + 10x - 3x - 30
x^2 + 6x + 8 = x^2 + 7x - 30
Combine the x's on the left, combine the numbers on the right
x^2 - x^2 + 6x - 7x = -30 - 8
-x = -38
which is
x = 38
Check this in the original problem
:
+ = 1
Multiply by 3x
3x* + 3x* = 3x(1)
Cancel the denominators, and you have:
5 + 3(3) = 3x
14 = 3x
x = 14/3
x = 4

Check this in the original, you can use 4.67 to do this on a calc, it should be very close to 1

Solve:
1) Cross-multiply.
Perform the indicated multiplication.
Subtract from both sides.
Subtract 6x from both sides.
Add 30 to both sides.

2) Use the common denominator of 3x to add the two fractions.
Multiply boh sides by 3x.
Divide both sides by 3.
