Learn what they call the "Slope Intercept formula" and it will make sense:

That is: y = mx + b

Where m = the slope and b = the y intercept

Write the equation of the line with slope -1/2 and y- intercept (0,3)

substitute -1/2 for m and 3 for b and you have:

y = (-1/2)x + 3
:
The y intercept is the point, (in this case it is +3), where the line crosses the y axis (vertical), and it always occurs when x = 0
:
The slope, in this case -1/2 is the slant of the line. negative indicates that the line slopes downward to the right and -1/2 means that it drops one unit vertically for every 2 units horizontally.
