Question 500214: A New York City taxi charges $2.50, plus $.40 for each fifth of a mile if it is not delayed by traffic. Write an expression for the cost of the ride if you travel x miles in the taxi with no traffic delays.

$2.50 is the meter drop.
The meter drop plus .2 miles(1/5 mile)times 40 cents is the price of the trip.
A mile costs fourty cents times five.
A mile costs 2 dollars.
You want X to equal a mile.
2.5+2X=cost of trip.
For one mile 2.5 + 2 = 4.5 (four and a half dollars)
