Question 499853: Solve using the substitution method. Show your work. If the system has no solution or an infinite number of solutions, state this.
x + 10y = 41
x + 9y = 37
so far I have:
x = 41-10y
(41-10y) + 9y =37
here is where I get confused.....
is it: 31x - 9y = 37
or do I add to get 51x + 9y = 37

Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You have (41-10y) + 9y =37 which is the same as 41-10y + 9y =37
Solve it to get
41-10y+9y=37
-y+41=37
-y=37-41
-y=-4
y=(-4)/(-1)
y=4
So the value of y is y = 4
Use this to find x.

.......so far is good; now just eliminate parentheses
....add
...move to the right and to the left
...now find
PS:
you asked "is it: ?...answer: NO, you cannot subtract from (as you cannot subtract apples from bananas)... is whole number and is a product of whole number and unknown variable
