Question 492278: Hi,im having problems with sloving equations with word problems.heres an example of one.A farmer is testing the strength of his new mule.The farmer wants to know how many boughs of hay the mule can pull,along with the cart and the farmer on board.The farmer knows that the mule can only pull 1000 pounds at one time.If the farmer wieghs 160 pounds,the cart wieghs 80 pounds,and each bough of hay wiegh 65 pounds,how many boughs can the mule pull with the cart and farmer on board??? please answer back asap im extremlyy confused. >.<

A farmer is testing the strength of his new mule.The farmer wants to know how many boughs of hay the mule can pull,along with the cart and the farmer on board.
The farmer knows that the mule can only pull 1000 pounds at one time.
If the farmer wieghs 160 pounds,the cart wieghs 80 pounds,and each bough of hay wiegh 65 pounds,how many boughs can the mule pull with the cart and farmer on board??

Let b = no. of boughs of hay he can haul
:
hay + man + cart = 1000
65b + 160 + 80 = 1000
65b + 240 = 1000
65b = 1000 - 240
65b = 760

b ~ 11 boughs of hay:

See if this adds up to 1000 or less
65 * 11 = 715
farmer; = 160
cart lb:= 80
---------------
total: = 955 lb, you can see if you added one more bough, it would exceed 1000 lb
