4x + 3 - 5x = x - 7
combiner like terms to get:
-x + 3 = x - 7
add x to both sides of the equation to get:
3 = 2x - 7
add 7 to both sides of the equation to get:
10 = 2x
divide both sides of the equation by 2 to get:
5 = x
this is the same as:
x = 5
that's your answer.
confirm by substituting for x in the original equation to get:
4*5 + 3 - 5*5 = 5 - 7
simplify to get:
20 + 3 - 25 = 5 - 7
simplify further to get:
-2 = -2 confirming the value of x is good.
