Assume the problem is:

12* - 12* = 12*
Cancel the denominators
1 - (x-1) = -3
Removing the bracket changes the signs to:
1 - x + 1 = -3
-x + 1 + 1 = -3
-x + 2 = -3
subtract 2 from both sides
-x = -3 -2
-x = -5
multiply both sides by -1
x = 5
