Question 456094: I am having trouble with solving for x in the following equation:

So far I have tried the following steps to simplify:
x+1=(x+2)(x-3)
x+1=
x+1=
x+7=
2x+7=
2+7=
9=
9x=
9=x
However, when I plug this solution for x into a calculator I end up with , which is not = to 9+2.
I hope you can explain this to me! I've been trying for hours over the past couple of days and I'm just not understanding it.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

(x+1)/(x-3)=x+2 }}}
So far I have tried the following steps to simplify:
x+1=(x+2)(x-3)
x+1=
x+1=
x+7=
2x+7=
----
Good up to this point:
Then:
x^2-2x-7 = 0
Now use the quadratic formula to solve for "x":
x = [2 +- sqrt(4-4*-7)]/2
----
x = [2 +- sqrt(32)]/2
---
x = [2 +- 4sqrt(2)]/2
---
x = 1+2sqrt(2) or x = 1 - 2sqrt(2)

Answer by edjones(8007)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(x+1)/(x-3)=x+2
x+1=(x-3)(x+2)
x+1=x^2-x-6
x^2-2x-7=0
x=1-2sqrt(2), x=1+2sqrt(2) see below

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation with variable
Quadratic equation (in our case ) has the following solutons:

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant : .

Discriminant d=32 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: .

Quadratic expression can be factored:

Again, the answer is: 3.82842712474619, -1.82842712474619. Here's your graph:
