Question 408274: Well , i'm not sure if i put the right topic but i'm really confused. My Class are learning how to solve equations having the variable in both members and so the question is :
The sum of two numbers is 17. Six times the smaller is two less than twice the greater. What are the numbers?

I don't know how to get the answer which is really stressing me out .

The sum of two numbers is 17. Six times the smaller is two less than twice the greater. What are the numbers?
-----
Equations:
x + y = 17
6x = 2y-2
----
If you solve by substitution you might do as follows:
x = 17-y
---
Substitute:
6(17-y) = 2y-2
102-6y = 2y-2
8y = 104
y = 13
---
Solve for "x":
x = 17-y
x = 17-13
x = 4

Call the numbers and
given:
(1)
(2) (assume is the smaller)
This is 2 equations with 2 unknowns, so when
number of equations = number of unknowns,
the system is solvable
------------------
Subtract from both sides of (2)
(2)
Multiply both sides of (1) by , and
add (1) and (2)
(1)
(2)

and, from (1),
(1)

The larger is 13 and the smaller is 4
check answer:"
(2)
(2)

OK
