What value of m makes the equation below TRUE?
6m-8=2(m+5)
6m-8=2(m+5)
Multiply 2 by each term inside the parentheses.
6m-8=2m+10
Since 2m contains the variable to solve for, move it to the left-hand side of the equation by subtracting 2m from both sides.
6m-8-2m=10
Since 6m and -2m are like terms, add -2m to 6m to get 4m.
4m-8=10
Since -8 does not contain the variable to solve for, move it to the right-hand side of the equation by adding 8 to both sides.
4m=8+10
Add 10 to 8 to get 18.
4m=18
Divide each term in the equation by 4.
(4m)/(4)=(18)/(4)
Simplify the left-hand side of the equation by canceling the common factors.
m=(18)/(4)
Simplify the right-hand side of the equation by simplifying each term.
m=(9)/(2)
Answer= m= 9/2 or, when put into a proper fraction, 4 1/2 (or 4.5)
