Let's go with the first one...
We wish to undo what is being done to x...since it is being multiplied by 1/2, we divide by 1/2 to undo it...we then get
Dividing by 1/2 is the same as multiplying by two ("How many half dollars are in three dollars?"), so we get
x = 6
