Hi,
Let x represent the smaller number, then the larger number is (3x + 5)
write as we read***
2x -4(3x +5) = 0
solve for x
2x - 12x - 20 = 0
-10x - 20 = 0
-10x = 20
x = -2 is the smaller number
(3x + 5) = -2*3 + 5 = -1 is the larger number
checking our answer
2*-2 - 4*(3*-2 + 5) = -4 - 4*-1 = -4 + 4 = 0
