Note: Generally, one combines like terms and isolates the variable on one side of the equation
12+2y=5y-12+5y
combining like terms
12+2y=10y-12
isolating the variable on one side of the equation
24 = 8y
further isolating by dividing both sides of the equation by 3
3 = y
