Question 35165: We need to Write the equation. Arnold had $1.70 in dimes and quarters. He had 3 more dimes than quarters. How many of each coin did he have?
We know the solution but we can't figure the equation to get there. We figured you have to convert the dimes and quarters to their dollar value but we still can't get the actual equation. Please help.
Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
D=Q+3 & 10D+25Q=170 OR SUBSTITUTING (Q+3) FOR Q IN THE SECOND EQUATION WE HAVE
10(Q+3)+25Q=170 OR 10Q+30+25Q==170 OR 35Q=140 OR Q=4 THEREFORE D=Q+3 OR D=7
PROOF 10*7+4*25=170 OR 70+100=170 OR 170=170
