Use the FOIL method to expand the left hand side.
Then subtract 4 from both sides of the equation.

Answer by nyc_function(2741)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(x + 1)(x - 2) = 4
x^2 - x - 2 = 4
x^2 - x - 2 -4 = 0
x^2 - x - 6 = 0
(x - 3)(x + 2) = 0
Set each factor to zero and solve for x.
x - 3 = 0
x = 3
AND
x + 2 = 0
x = -2
Final answer: x = 3 and x = -2.
