Distribute the 3

Combine like terms

subtract 8 from both sides

Divide by 3

3( w + 5 ) - 7 = 1
first solve brackets on LHS and u get
3w + 15 - 7 = 1
3w + 8 = 1
subtract 8 from both sides and we get
3w = -7
divide both by 3 and we get
w = - 7/3
Now if you want to verify you answer ,,,you can put the values of w in the given equation and if you get LHS = RHS,,,this means that you answer is correct..
