I would appreciate any help to at least get started, it's been 2 long.

since you are adding ... just add the like variables.

Problem 2
drop the parenthesis
combine like terms

now just dropping the parenthesis ONLY works if adding. If subtracting you have to worry about changing the signs of everything AFTER the subtraction
