A couple of examples are needed here:
1)
We want to get all the X's on one side and the numbers on the other side. So subtract 2x from both sides
now we want our answer in terms of X not 2x so divide both sides by 2
2) Here is another one:
subtract four from both sides
now add 2x to both sides
again answers are expressed in terms of x not 5x, so divide both sides by 5
