Question 308822: I was wondering what the pressure must be a mile deep in the water.
If water weighs 59.52 lbs/ft^3, what pressure in pounds per square inch would it cause at 5,280 feet below the surface? Hint: Calculate the weight of a column of water with an area of 1 square inch and 5,280 feet high.

Answer by Fombitz(32388)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Calculate the volume of the 1 inch square x 1 mile column.
Convert the 1 mile to feet since the density is in feet.
Convert the 1 inch square to 1 ft square also.
1 in*1 in*(1 ft/12 in)^2=1/144 ft^2
1 mile=5280 ft

ft^3
Find the weight of the column by multiplying the volume and the density of water.

lbs
That weight acts on the 1 inch square area.

psi or about 148 atmospheres.
