An excursion boat takes 2hours longer to go 45miles up a river than to return. If the boat's speed in still water is 12miles per hour, what is the speed of the current? Use T for time and x for the current.
Using the formula distance = rate*time
The formula for the trip upstream (against the current) is
1.) 45 = (12-x)*(T+2)
The formula for the trip downstream (with the current) is
2.) 45 = (12+x)*T
Solve 1.) and 2.) simultaneously for T and X
