Let one number = 3x
Let the other number = 3x+2

The equation becomes:

Now solve for "x", then multiply by 3 to find the lesser number.

let n be the first number
n=2+3n
n+3n+2=26
4n=24
n=6
3"*6+2=20
and 26-6=20
