Question 247768: Is there a 3rd grade way to solve this equation?
In a game of baseball one team gets 8 more points than the other. The total score is 16. what was each teams score? I say (x+8)+x=16 therefore x=4, other team get 12. I don't know if 3rd graders routinely know alegbra. how would they be told to solve this? Thanks

not sure about elementary school math (arithmetic)

the two teams together had 16

one team had 8 "extra"

if you take away the extra (subtraction) you have 8

both teams have the same (without the "extra"), so each team has 4 (division by 2)

the team with the "extra" has 8 more, or 12
