Presuming your rectangle ABCD is named in standard fashion, BC and AD are opposite sides and are therefore equal in measure by definition of a rectangle. (And it has to be true that BC = AD otherwise you don't have enough information to solve the problem)
Hence:

Just solve for , then substitute back into either expression and calculate either BC or AD. The other one is then the same amount.

The one about the square is the same thing except you don't care how the figure is named because all 4 sides are equal anyway. Just set the two expressions equal to one another and then solve for

ABCD is a rectangle
BC=4x-5,AD=2x+3
Find BC and AD.
---
BC and AD are opposite sides of the rectangle so they are equal:
4x-5 = 2x+3
2x = 8
x = 4
--
BC = 4x-5 = 4*4-4 = 11
AD = 2x+3 = 2*4+3 = 11
========================

ABCD is a square
AB=8x-6 and BC=5x+12
Find the length of each side of the square.
The sides of the square are equal.
8x-6 = 5x+12
3x = 18
x = 6
AB = 8x-6 = 8*6-6 = 42
BC = 5x+12 = 5*6+12 = 42
