Question 246279: 2 joggers start at the same point at the same time and jog in opposite directions. Joanna jogs at 5 1/2mph and Barbara jogs at 4 3/4mph How far apart will they be in 1 1/4 hours?
Answer by rapaljer(4671)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Add their rates of jogging together since they are jogging in opposite directions, and multiply by the time:

(5 1/2 + 4 3/4)*(1 1/4)

Now, there are three ways to do this! First, use a calculator!! Unfortunately, I'm on a weekend away from home, and I didn't bring my calculator!

Second, you can convert everything to decimals and calculate.

Third, you can convert to improper fractions, which is the way we do most mathematics.

Get a common denominator:

You can calculate that one if you want to, but since I don't have my calculator, that will be my final answer.
