Don't make this harder than it is.
Since we are only adding the elements and there are no divisions nor multiplications we can just remove all the parentheses. Also there was no change of signs (plus/minus)
x+4x+32=12
combine
5x+32=12
subtract 32 from both sides
5x=-20
divide both sides by 5
x=-4
check
-4+ (4(-4) +32)=12
-4 -16+32=12
-20+32=12
12=12
