Question 229645: Ok I'm not exactly sure what category this goes under, but we learned how to identify "Sub-problems" which is basically a problem that you have to solve from a bigger problem. Confusing? I know. But this is the question I was stuck on.
"Five housemates held a party. They agreed to share the expenses equally. Leroy spent $20 on soft drinks. Alex spent $5 on paper plates. Kulwinder spent $13 on decorations. Max spent $16 on snacks. Bobbi spent $8 on envelopes and paper to send out invitations, and she also spent $7.40 on postage stamps. Who owes money to whom?"
Basically I'm stuck on how to find the "Sub-problems" or how to go about solving the problem. If anyone knows how to do so then I would appreciate it a lot! Thank you so much in advance!!

:
Wouldn't you just find out total money that was spent. Divide that by 5.
That's the share of each person. Compare that with the amt each spent.
:
Let s = amt each owes to the total
s =
s =
s = $13.88 amt each should pay
:
Then I assume these would be the sub problems:
L: 20 - 13.88 = 6.12 owed to Larry
A: 13.88 - 5 = 8.88 has to be paid by Alex
K: 13.88 - 13 = .88 has to be paid by Kul
M: 16 - 13.88 = 2.12 owed to Max
B: 8 + 7.40 - 13.88 = 1.52 owed to Bobbi
:
One way is have everyone who owes, put the money on the table, that would be
8.88 + .88 = 9.76
Then each remove what is owed them, should equal above amt if we did this right
L takes: 6.12
M takes: 2.12
B takes: 1.52
--------------
total $ 9.76

How about this? Did this make sense?
