Question 21880: Hey, i have been trying to work this one problem out for hours. It says to write the equation of the line that is parallel to the given line and passes through the given point. Please help me solve this equation: (4,-2)
Answer by queenofit(120)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You will use the point slope formula for this question. all parallel lines have the same slope. If you do not have the slope, you will have to find it first by working the equation to put it into the formula y=mx+b (m being slope.
Your equation is already in this form y=4x+6 the slope is 4 (always the number in front of the x) (If you are finding perpendicular lines you use the neg. reciprocal of the number in front of x as your slope)
You must put your equation into the point slope formula y-y1=m(x-x1)
you have y1 and x1 in your points. so plug them in along with your slope(m)
(y-(-2)= 4(x-4)
y+2=4x-16
y=4x-16-2
y=4x-18
notice your slope(m)for your answer is the same as your given equation because parallel lines have the same slope. If you were looking for a perpendicular line you would use -1/4 as your slope (neg reciprocol) and place this in the formula instead of 4x it would be y-(-2)=-1/4x(x-4) and then solve and put in y=mx+b form.
