Let x = the number
It's opposite =-x
x = -x -38
Add +x to each side of the equation:
x+x=-x+x-38
2x=-38
x=-19
The number is -19, its opposite is 19. The number is indeed 38 less than its opposite, since -19 = 38 less than 19.
