Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Adult tickets for a play cost $6.00, and children's tickets cost $2.50. For one performance, 370 tickets were sold. Receipts for the performance were $1723. Find the number of adult tickets sold.
-----------------------------
Equations:
Quantity Eq: a + c = 370
Value Eq::::6a + 2.5c = 1723
-------------------------------------
Modify the 1st equation to set up the system for elimination:
2.5a + 2.5c = 2.5*370
---
Sutract that from the Value equation and solve for "a":
3.5a = 798
a = 228 (# of adult tickets sold)
