let x = the length of the shorter pieces
8x = the length of the longer piece
2%28x%29%2B8%2Ax=6
12x=6
x=0.5
The shorter pieces each have length of 0.5yd, and the longer piece has a length of 8%2A0.5 = 4yd

Let the shortest piece be p

Then the 2 shorter pieces = 2p

Also, the longest piece is 8p

Since the entire length is 6 yards, then 2p + 8p = 6

10p = 6
