Suppose that a household's monthly water bill (in dollars) is a linear function of the amount of water the household uses (in hundreds of cubic feet, HCF). When graphed, the function gives a line with a slope of 1.75
If the monthly bill for 18 HCF is 29.84, what is the monthly bill for 14 HCF?

I just did a ratio.
18/29.84:14/x
18x=417.76
x=$23.21

Since the bill is a linear function, when one variable increases, the other increases too, or, when one variable decreases, so does the other.
Additionally, the slope of the line, along with the y-intercept will remain constant. We will therefore get:
, where the bill (b) will be determined by c (the household’s consumption), and where is the y-intercept. In order to determine the value of though, we will need to substitute the other values.
Therefore, our linear equation is: b(c) = 1.75(c) – 1.66
b(c) = 1.75(14) – 1.66
b(c) = 24.50 – 1.66
b(c) = 22.84
