Question 200250: A square field had 5 meters added to its length and 2 meters added to its width. The field then had an area of 130 meters squared. Find the length of a side of the original field.
The equation I came up with is n+5(n+2)= 130^2. At which point I am unfamiliar with how to solve this.

The area is 130 square meters. Not 130^2. Area is always in some sort of squared linear measure.
Now expand
So the possible lengths are -15 and 8. Since a length can't be negative, the original field was 8 meters on each side.
