Question 199527: I'm taking a college algebra class. I have not had any algebra experience in over 20 years, so I'm very rusty. My first problem is below. I think that I solved it, but I would like input from you to see if I'm on the right track.
Problem:
16-2x+5=5x Here's what I did: 16-2x+2x+5=5x
16+5=5x+2x
21=7x
21/7=7x/7
3=x
Please let me know if the steps to solving this are correct and if the answer is correct.
I have a few other problems.
A. 4(y-1)=2(3+y) I don't remember how to do problems w/ parentheses.
B. 2/3-x/6=1
C. 0.2(x-4)=3
Any help you can offer to get me started in the right direction is appreciated. Thanks for your time and assistance.

It's correct.
I have a few other problems.
A. 4(y-1)=2(3+y) I don't remember how to do problems w/ parentheses.
Multiply both terms inside the parentheses by the coefficients (numbers) outside.
4y-4 = 6+2y
Subtract 2y from both sides
2y-4 = 6
Add 4
2y = 10
y = 5
---------
B. 2/3-x/6=1
It's not clear, but
Multiply thru by 6
4-x = 6
-x = 2
x = -2
------
C. 0.2(x-4)=3
Multiply by 5
(x-4) = 15
x = 19

first answer is correct.
remember ()() means multiply
x means multiply
* means multiply
a) 4y-4=6+2y
2y=10
y=5
b) 2/3-x/6=1
4/6-x/6=1
4-x=1
-x=1-4
x=-1+4
x=3
c) 0.2(x-4)=3
0.2x-0.8=3
.2x=3+0.8
.2x=3.8
x=19
Just to let you know, it isn't as easy as it once was, I am 69 and still tutor GED students just to keep fresh.
