Question 196347: Hello!
I'm having trouble with the following problem. I keep coming up with the answer t^2=61/4 but I don't know what to do further on. Can you help me solve this problem?
Suppose an object is dropped from a height h0 above the ground. Then its height after t seconds is given by h = -16t 2 + h0, where h is measured in feet. Use this information to solve the problem.
If a ball is dropped from 244 ft above the ground, how long does it take to reach ground level?

but you are given that , so

You want to know the value of when , presuming you are considering the ground to be at a height of zero. So:

from which you obtained:

Simply take the square root of both sides. Under ordinary circumstances, you would consider both the positive and negative square roots. However, in this case the negative answer is absurd because the object most certainly did not hit the ground at some time before it was dropped.

61 being prime, this is the exact answer reduced to simplest terms. You can punch it in to a calculator to get a numerical approximation if you like -- should be right around 3.9 or so.
